Recent concern over higher than expected failure rates in some metal on metal hip replacements and resurfacings has generated considerable discussion both in the orthopaedic community and the national press.
DePuy metal on metal hips and ASR resuracings have high (approx 12%) rates of failure and patients have been advised to contact their surgeon.
Mr Ward has not implanted any of these hips.
Mr Ward has used metal on metal resurfacings manufactured by other companies and in line with national guide lines has written to all resurfacing patients advising regular follow up.
Any patient who has had a total hip replacement performed by Mr Ward will have a polyethylene socket and a metal or ceramic head. There is no concern at all about metal ions in these patients.
Any concerned patient is advised to contact either the Winterbourne or Mr Wards secretary
